Rice Krispie Treats!

Come 4 o’clock and I crave my cup of tea. And a savoury snack with it.

Since I eat fruit for breakfast and salad for lunch, I really yearn for something spicy and crunchy at tea time. And that almost always entails Indian snacks – murukkus, chiwda, samosas, bondas, bajjis, ribbon pakodas…..don’t even get me started- which are not high on the healthy food list.

With the Diva at home, we buy a lot of cereals and I had a box of slightly stale Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, with no takers. And this is what they asked to turn themselves into…..crunchy, spicy, tasty and not unhealthy at all!

Ingredients:

2 cups of Rice Krispies

1/2 tsp vegetable oil

Mustard seeds (optional)

1/8 tsp turmeric powder

2 green chillies, diced (less if you can’t take the heat)

3-4 curry leaves

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp chilli powder

2 tsps fine grained sugar

Method:

In a large wok, heat oil and add the mustard seeds. When they pop, add the chillies and curry leaves.

Fry for a minute, then add the turmeric powder and the Rice Krispies.

Toast on low heat for a few minutes longer, adding chilli powder and salt.

Once done, turn off the heat and add the sugar onto the Rice Krispies. Stir to mix in completely.

Cool and serve with a cup of tea! Enjoy guiltlessly!

  1. Ooh this looks good but would be entirely too spicy for me. I’ll have a cup of tea though please! (I wish I really could in real life!)

Oh and I can’t tell you what I’m snacking on these days because you’ll judge me. 😉

    • Hey Azita! You are probably celebrating Ramzan now? What treats do you break the fast with? Do you guys also called it Iftar?

My neighbours used to make the most yummy masala wadas. It’s like a falafel, but even yummier!

Oh, you can tone down the Rice Krispie snack. Don’t add any chillies or chilli powder. Just salt and sugar.

      • Oops! Time for a confession. It’s way too hot this month and I’m not fasting. I am not a good moslem I’m afraid! 🙁 I kind of pick and choose and hope that God will let me get away with it. I AM observing the other tenets of the month including averting from any lies, deceit, or ill thoughts, words or deeds.

Breaking the fast in indeed called Iftar (or as we Persians pronounce it Eftar.) I’ve asked a friend whose family does observe to share a pic with me which I’d then love to share on my blog. It’s supposed to be a feast!

Something yummier than falafel? I’ve got to see this yummy masala wadas. 🙂

        • Sweetie, you don’t have to fast to be good! It was society’s way of getting people to detox.

Oh and those masala wadas are something!

  2. I love the idea of savory cereal! I really wish there was something ready-made like this on the market… It would be a top seller, no doubt.

    • There is! And it is! Just google Haldiram snacks and savouries. You can even buy them on Amazon now. And they come in varying degrees of heat, so everyone can enjoy something. Try the mild ones like the Khatta Meeta or the Cornflakes Chiwda to start with.

      Enjoy!

  3. First I wondered why is Radhika writing about rice krispie!?
I have had these flavorful Indian snacks many times in many flavors. My Indian classmates use to bring to school, and also another Singaporean-Indian friend brought them for snacks for potlucks. Yum Yum Yum!

  4. This sounds interesting and looks great. A Savory Cereal recipe!

    I AM NOT A DIVA!

  6. Lately I’ve been enjoying a honey and oat granola bar. It’s been crazily hot here so my hot tea i love dearly has been missing for a few days. 🙁

  7. What a great unique recipe! I just tweeted it!! I can’t wait to try this one!
